After a sixteen day break in the migration, the Class of 2008 departed Franklin County Alabama on December 29 to Chilton County.
On December 30 the birds and their guides left Chilton County, and arrived in Walker County Alabama.
After checking weather modeling sites last evening, Operation Migration's resident weather forecaster, Chris Gullikson, reported, "the prospects for a flight in the morning isn't good, and the weak cold front moving through the area will bring northwest winds that will likely be a bit too strong for us."
The migration added 113 miles to their accumulated distance this week. They are currently grounded in Walker County Alabama.
EASTERN MIGRATORY POPULATION UPDATE

Date: December 30, 2008 -
As of December 27 2008 the size of the Eastern Migratory Population is unchanged at 74 Whooping cranes; 42 males and 32 females. The trackers estimated the following numbers of birds in each of the states listed.
Florida – 21
Georgia – 4
South Carolina – 4
Alabama – 9
Tennessee – 17
Either still migrating or at unknown locations – 16
The remaining three birds are:
416, which was last observed at Necedah in early October
DAR740* which was last observed mid November in Michigan
205NFT which has not been reported since October of 2007.
